Nanjing, briefly known as Ning, is the provincial seat of Jiangsu province and a sub-provincial city. A sub-central city of the Yangtze River Delta, Nanjing is an important, comprehensive, industrial production city in China. The production capabilities of electronic and petrochemical industries of Nanjing rank the 2nd among the domestic cities, scale of vehicle manufacturing the 3rd, and the scale and technology of machinery-making in top positions, with relatively large-scale industries of home electronic appliances and building materials. In 2008, Nanjing’s GDP totaled RMB 377.5 billion. The population of permanent residents amounts to 7.413 million, with a per capita GDP of RMB 50,883.

Nanjing is an important transportation and communication hub in East China, with all-round, three-dimensional and large-volume transport network, full five modes of transport, namely rail, highway, water, air and pipeline and a modern communication system. Nanjing is one of the top four core cities in scientific research and education, important base of high-school education and scientific research with a batch of first-class high schools and scientific research institutions in China.
