Baiyin Overview
Baiyin is a city directly under Gansu Province, located in the center of Longhai and Lanxin Economical Zone, upper reaches of the Yellow River. It is a developing city as industrial and mineral base with a reputation of Copper City. In 1997, the nation proved Baiyin one of the experimental cities for capital restructuring.
The total area of Baiyin is about 21,200 square kilometers, with a population of one million. Now Baiyin has jurisdiction over Baiyin District, Pingchuan District and three Counties (Jingyuan County, Jingtai County and Huining County).District
Baiyin is rich in land resources and has a lot of mountains and rivers. The Yellow River crosses Baiyin at a length of 214km. Crops include wheat, maize, gruel, rice, etc. Local specialties for export include Daban black melon seed, soybean, hyacinth bean, Tan sheep skin, etc.
Baiyin is an important base of nonferrous metal in China and the important base of energy recourses and chemical industries in Gansu province as a developing industrial city. It got its name 600 years ago for Baiyin Factory, an official institution which handled the excavation of gold and silver. It is clarified that there are more than 30 kinds of metal and nonmetal minerals like copper, zinc, gold, silver and coal. The reserve of coal is 1.4 billion tons, gypsum 0.2 billion tons and limestone 1 billion tons which are being or to be exploited.
Containing useful trace elements, mineral water in Huining County is proved to be Baiyin has a long history and glorious tradition. There are many remains of ancient culture and natural views like Banshan Cultural Relic, the Great Wall of Ming Dynasty, Faquansi Cave, Wulang Mountain, Tiemu Mountain, Taohua Mountain, Baiyin is also a memorial place for the Join Forces of the Red Army. Huining County was proved to be a national patriotism educational base. The remains of ancient culture, the Silk Road and the route of the Long Mach.
Making full use of the water resources of the Yellow River, Baiyin is developing high-lift irrigating agriculture and becomes an important high-lift irrigating area in the upper reaches of the Yellow River (irrigated area above one million mu).
