Overview
Yulin City has a population of 3170 thousand, covering an area of 43578 square kilometers and governing one borough as well as 11 counties, such as Yuyang Borough, Shenmu County and Fugu County. City Government is located in Yuyang Borough. It was titled as Historical and Cultural City by State Department in 1986.
Yulin City is situated north of Shaanxi Province. The ancient Great Wall stretches from southwest through within the city to northeast. It is right in the bordering center of five provinces; say Shaanxi Province, Gansu Province, Ningxia Province, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It is also the bordering zone for the Midwest Area of china. To the north of the Great Wall are deserts and meadows, to the south of it lays ocher hills. Besides, national high ways Line 307and Line 210 pass through the city. Two railways, Line Baoshen and Line Shensu are transportation arteries for Shenfu Coalfield. Yulin City enjoys a long history and can be traced back to ancient times. As early as Old Stone Age, Hetao people, namely the offspring of forefather Huangdi lived and multiplied on this land. At the beginning of Xia Dynasty, Yulin area was situated within Yongzhou Prefecture, and belonged to Shangjun Prefucture and became economic center for the major nationality Han and the minor group Mongolia in Qin Dynast. Since then, the central governments of several dynasties say Han Dynasty, Wei Dynasty, Jin Dynasty, Sui Dynasty, Tang Dynasty, Song Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty, set up governing systems in Yulin area. At the beginning of Ming Dynasty, Yulin Village was built on the basis of Yulin Manor. At Zhengtong 2ed years (A.D.1437), it was built a city. Chenghua 7 years of Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1471), it was changed to Yulin Wei. In Chenghua nine years, the government of Yansui Town moved to Yunlin, so it was initially called Yulin Town, and ever since it was one of the most important towns in that area. During Yongzheng Period of Qing Dynasty, it was changed from Yulin Town, Yulin Wei to Yulin Dao, Yulin Fu and Yulin County finally. Even in the period governed by Kuomintang, it was still set up as Yulin County. After it was liberated peacefully from the reign of Kuomintang on June 1, 1949, Yulin County was always the locating place of governing office for the area. It was changed from Yulin County to Yuin City, which was approved by State Apartment in 1988.
