Shishi, a comprehensive reform test zone of Fujian Province, is prominently located in the Gold Triangle of Southern Fujian Province, just between the historical city of Quanzhou and Xiamen Special Economic Zone. Shishi's occupies an area of 160 sq. km with coastline of approximately 67.7 kilometers and a population of 296,000. Non-residents from other areas are 200,000. Shishi has been one of "China's top 100"economically strong counties (or county-level cities)" since 1993. It is ranked No.16 in the "100 most developed counties" of 2002 and NO.2 in the "Fujian top 10 economically strong counties"(or county-level cities).

Shishi is a famous hometown of overseas Chinese and an open-up window to Taiwan. Total number of overseas Chinese and compatriots in Hong Kong and Macao amounted to 300,000. More than 300,000 Taiwan compatriots are from Shishi. By the end of 2002, Shishi municipal government has approved 1619 foreign investment enterprises, with total foreign investment of US$ 2.68 billion, utilized US$ 2.36 billion. The total output value of foreign-funded enterprises amounted to US$ 9.48 billion, exports US$ 250 million. Foreign-investment enterprises have become the mainstay for economic development in Shishi.

As a well-known garment city in China, Shishi was rewarded the title "China Famous Casual Wear City" by China National Textile Industry Council (CNTIC) and China National Garment Association (CNGA). More than 2700 manufacture enterprises of textile and garment are in the city, with a production value of about RMB 10 billion. 2000 trademarks mainly include garment trademarks, and Emperor Brand, Jinxibao, Pin Brand, Hadeli and Wild Leopard are the famous brands in the country. An industry chain leads by garment production and composes of textile, printing & dyeing, supplement production, slopwork production, marketing and transportation.
