Gongyi Overview
Located in the central hinterland of Henan Province, lying at the northern foot of Mount Song, the Gongyi City covers an area of 1041 square kilometers( tillable field 500,000 mu) and has a population of 790,000. Gongyi has the ethnic groups such as Han, Hui, Uighur, Yi, Miao and Bai, etc. nationalities. The Gongyi minicipal Party committee and city government are stationed in the east centre of the city. They have jurisdiction over 16 towns, 5 subdistrict offices and 290 administrative villages.
After the foundation of the People’s Republic of China,Gongyi City was under the jurisdiction of Zhengzhou. In January 1955, it began to be under the control of Kaifeng and in August 1983 it was re-controlled by Zhengzhou. And in 1991 with the approval of the State Council, Gongyi was changed into a country-level city but still under the jurisdiction of Zhengzhou.
With 82 kilometers east to Zhengzhou and 76 kilometers west to Luoyang, Gongyi City enjoys obvious geographical advantage. The Longhai (Lianyungang-Qinghai) Railway, the 310 State Highway and the Lianhuo Expressway traverse Gongyi City from east to west; the Yu 31 Provincial Highway and Jiaogong (Jiaozuo-Gongyi) Yellow River Bridge run through Gongyi city from north to south. The total service mileage has reached 1347 kilometers and it has 6 special railway lines connecting with the national railways. The number of telephones installed in our city is 177,574 and program-controlled telephones have been installed in all towns. It is the first one among the country-level cities of Henan Province who has installed ten thousands of program-controlled telephones and carried on mobile communication construction work. And it's the first city who realized optical fibre digital communication and has been successfully merged with the power grid of Zhengzhou.
