Located in the south of Yangtze River Delta and (central NingShao Plain) in the middle of Shangxing-Ningbo Plain, Yuyao sits on a fertile land of natural beauty. (Facing Shanghai across the sea,) Yuyao neighbors NingBo to the east, Hangzhou to the west, with SiMing Mountain in the south, (and Hangzhou Bay to the north) and in the north it borders on Hangzhou Bay, faces shanghai across the sea. It took only half an hour to drive to Ningbo International Airport, 40 minutes to the large harbor, Beilun Harbor, Ningbo, 1 hour to Xiaoshan International Airport, Hangzhou and 2 hours and 1 hour to Shanghai through Hu-Hang-Yong Expressway and Hangzhou Bay Cross-Sea Bridge respectively. Yuyao has been incorporated into “2-hour transport circle” of Shanghai. As a section of Zhedong Canal, Yaojiang River provides convenient transport both by water or by land.

The city consists of 6 (neighborhoods) sub-districts, 14 towns, 1 county, and 265 administrative villages, with a total administrative area of (1501)1527 square kilometers. Yuyao is inhabited by 830 thousand registered residents, as well as 500 thousand migrants. In 2008, the city’s GDP reached RMB 48.47 billion, and general budgetary revenue of the local government totaled RMB 7.02 billion, including RMB 3.33 billion of income at local level. The urban per capita annual disposal income was RMB 25114, and the per capita net income for rural residents reached RMB 10997. And the city (ranks) ranked the 9th among (China’s 100 most competitive economies at county level.) national Top 100 counties (cities) in terms of comprehensive strength.

Yuyao boasts a long history and a profound culture. It was among the first batch of Famous Historic and Cultural Cities recognized by Zhejiang Province. The history of Yuyao can be traced as far back as 2200 years ago when the Qin Dynasty first established a county here. Traditionally noted as (“Land of Literatures and Scholars”,) “Land of Literatures”, “Most Cultured in the Southeast”, and “Giant County in the Yue Prefecture”, Yuyao is home to a variety of culture heritages and historic sites. Among them are Hemudu Neolithic Culture represented by Hemudu ruins and Tianluo Mountain site, Yaojiang River Culture represented by “the four most celebrated scholars”, namely, Yang Ziling, Wang Yangming, Zhu Shunshui and Huang Zongxi, as well as Zhejiang Red Culture represented by Siming Mountain Anti-Japanese Base, all being covered by the term “Three Cultures of Yuyao”, which enjoys high reputation at home and abroad. In particular, the discovery of Hemudu Neolithic Ruins pushed ahead the history of the Chinese nation by more than 2000 years, and established the Yangtze River Valley’s status as one of the cradles for the Chinese civilization.
