Zhangzhou Municipality Overview
Zhangzhou located to the south of Fujian Province, facing Taiwan and next to Hong Kong and Macao, as well as between Xiamen and Shantou special economic zone. Covering a land area of 12,600 square meters, including 160,000 hectares farmland and 825,300 hectares mountain land, a sea area of 18,600 square kilometers, Zhangzhou has a population of 4.5914 million and a resident population of 4.72 million. Zhangzhou is a famous home town for overseas Chinese and Taiwan residents in Fujian province for almost one third of the population in Taiwan is originally from Zhangzhou. And it is also the national historical culture city honored by State Council of China. Zhangzhou is also called the hometown of narcissus and thus narcissus is regarded as the city flower of Zhangzhou. It is a time-honoured city as well as a well-known "land of plenty".
The climate in Zhangzhou belongs to subtropical monsoon moist climate. The yearly average temperature is 21℃ and the yearly average sunshine hour is more than 2000 hours as well as the yearly average rainfall are around 1500mm.
Interestingly, the South Fujian dialect is spoken with local variations tin the counties of Zhangzhou. As Zhangzhou is a major native place of Taiwan compatriots, custom here is quite similar with that in Taiwan; the Jin Song and Xiang Opera share tthe same origin with the Gezi Opera in Taiwan; there are Taiwan Banana, Taiwan pineapple and even Taiwan Road,...From the city to the countryside, there are marks showing the close relation of Zhangzhou with Taiwan.
Zhangzhou is both beautiful and rich. The 33 scenic spots have a long history of reputation, such as Nanshan Temple, Sanping Temple, Ciji Palace, Yundong Rock, Ancient Fortress of the Song Dynasty, and ancient castle of Tongshan. The urban district, Xiangcheng, has always been reputed as the "City of Flowers and Fruits". The narcissus is a speciality of Zhangzhou, so the city is also called "Hometown of Narcissus". The mandarin orange of Zhangzhou, the banana of Tianbao, the Litchi of Qiuhu, the date of Yunxiao, the pomelo of Pinghe and of Huaan are called the "six renowned fruits of the South Fujian" and have won an international fame.
