Taizhou City Overview
Taizhou City is a young coastal city along the golden coast line of China, it is situtated in the middle of the coastal area of Zhejiang Province and the south tip of Shanghai Economic Zone. The central of the city locates at 122゜ east longitude, 28゜ north latitude, and belongs to the sub-tropical monsoon climate. There are 3 districts in the urban area, namely Jiaojiang, Huangyan and Luqiao. And under its jurisdiction are Linhai City and Wenling City, as well as four counties namely Yuhuan, Tiantai, Xianju and Tiantai. The land area of the city covers 9411 square kilometers, sea area covers 80,000 square kilometers, with a population of 5.46 million. The urban area of the city covers 1536 square kilometers with a population of 1.4 million.
History
Taizhou has a long history, it is the place where the fossil of the wing dinosaur of the south was unearthed, and it is also the cradle of the Xiatang culture which dates back in the new stone age of 5000 years ago. Huipu village was established by emperor Qinshihuang after he unified China. Huipu County was established in Han Dynasty ( 85 B.C. ). And Linhai Prefecture was set up in the period of the Three Kindoms ( 257 ). It began to be called Taizhou city since Tang Dynasty ( 622 ). After the foundation of new China, the structure had been a administration office. In August, 1994, the establishment of Taizhou City was approved by the State Council.
Landscape
Having always enjoyed the reputation of renowned mountain in the sea, Taizhou possesses advantages of both mountain and sea. Taizhou is one of the main production bases of grain in China. It is the place where the rice yielded per Mu first exceeded 1000 and 2000 Jin. Being one of the fruit bases of China, Taizhou’s Huangyan orange and Yuhuan pomelo are world famous. With vast and rich fishery in the Eastern China Sea, Taizhou is also one of the main fishing grounds of China, its production of fishery ranks first in Zhejiang.
Economy
Being the cradle of the share cooperative system of China, Taizhou’s economy is advanced and its market is prosperous. Since 20 years of reform and opening up, Taizhou people emancipated their minds, worked hard to start undertakings, opened new paths with pioneering spirit, and found a way of economic development which fits with the reality of the City, primarily setting up a socialist market economy structure with special characteristics, accomplishing the primary stage of industrialization with fast speed in a comparatively backward area of pure agriculture, and becoming one of the coastal cities of relatively advanced economy.
Traffic
Taizhou possesses convenient traffic and advanced telecommunication. Haimen Port has always been an important port of exchange with the outside world, where the route between the continent and Taiwan was first opened in the year 230. Today, Taizhou possesses ports, airport, national road No.104 and the coastal highway, a three dimensional traffic system of sea, land and air has taken primary shape.
Culture
Being a place of culture, studying has always been the trend in Taizhou. People are honest and the society is peaceful. The landscape of mountains and sea is beautiful, with numerous scenic spots and historical sites. The technology and education are well developed, and people of talent emerge in succession. The place is blessed with a favourable climate, fertile land and rich resources, and has become a rich place in the gold coastal line of China.
Future
In 1999, Taizhou was approved by the State Council to be a big city in Zhejiang’s urbanization structure and center of sub zone of first class economy. In 2000, the municipal Party Committee and Government put forward the strategic target of developing big industry, exploiting big port, constructing big traffic and building big city. The orientation of Taizhou is to be a prosperous, civilized, beautiful and modern port city of large dimension.
The target of the second leaping forward of Taizhou is to build Taizhou a modern coastal city of advanced science, industry and trade before 2020.
