Overview
Liaoyang is not only an ancient cultural city with a long history of about 2,400 years, but also a rising industrialized city for petrochemical industry, light industry and textile industry. The city covers a total area of about 4,731 square kilometers and has a population of about 1.78 million, among which urban population is 690 thousand.
Liaoyang boasts many famous historical sights of human cultures and numerous beautiful scenic spots. The famous historical sights of human cultures include the tomb groups and frescos during the period of Han and Wei, the Yanzhou City (Baiyan City) of Gaojuli in the Tang Dynasty, the Coloured Glaze Well of the Eight Treasures, the White Tower in the Liao Dynasty, the Qing Feng Temple, the site of the walls of the ancient city, the Dongjing City and the Dongjing Mausoleum of the Qing Dynasty, the stele for Cao Zhenyan, the great-great-grandfather of Cao Xueqin, the memorial of Cao Xueqin, the Peng Residence (today’s Liaoyang Museum)which is a typical building of the north China in the early years of the Republic of China. In the Liaoyang Museum, the tourists can find the materials about the unearthing of the pre-historical sites of the Liaoyang Region, the valuable cultural and historical materials of the past dynasties, and the birthday screen for Wang Erlie which had the inscriptions and the paintings by 125 famous scholars and important ministers of the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods of the Qing Dynasty such as the Emperor Jiaqing and Ji Xiaolan.
