Located in the middle part of Shan Dong Province, Laiwu borders on Jinan, the capital of Shan Dong Province in the west and is near Zibo, the ancient capital city in Northern Qi Dynasty in the east and is adjacent to Qufu, the hometown of the Confucius in the south. Laiwu is not only a hygiene city of national level and garden city in Shan Dong Province, but also the important steel and energy source base of Shan Dong Province. It has been long honored as “Green Steel City”.
With its ancient names as Ying and Mou, Laiwu is the cradle of Qilu Culture and has a history of more than 3000 years. As the converging place of Qilu Culture, Laiwu is equipped with a long history, resplendent culture, abundant historic sites, picturesque scenery and rich tourism resources. Wenyang Cultural Relic is an important component of Big Wenkou Culture and has a history of tens of thousand years. Changshao Culture represented the living style and producing features during the Yin and Shang Dynasties. The Confucius, a great educator and thinker in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, once came here to attend a ceremony and Guanpao once distribute the gold here. In the ranges of Laiwu, there remains the relic of the Great Wall of Qi Dynasty which is in a relatively good condition and 400 years longer than the world-known Great Wall in Qin Dynasty. The Site of famous “Changshao Battle” and the Qilu Nipping Joining Site in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period are also very precious. In addition, it has a historical culture of mining and smelting with profound connotation. When it comes to the natural tourism resources, it has a variety of landforms: mountains, waters, woods, caves, gorges, ponds, falls and springs and so on. There are eight wonders and ten well known mountains in Laiwu, representing the unique scenic spots there and attracting a good many literary men to come over for poem chanting.
