Overview
Located in northwest of Hunan, Changde is the gorge place to Changsha, Sichua, Guizhou, Guangdong and three gorges area. It was called Wuling in ancient times, and has been regarded as “the lips and teeth of west Hunan”, “the gorge to Guizhou and Sichuan”.
Water is the sea of Changde City. One third of Dongting Lake is in Changde. The core area is Ping Lake, which is an important international everglade. Here, there are lakes, islands and beaches, with many birds reside here. It is a nice place to relax in nature.
There are many relics here, the most famous of which is Peachblossom Land described by Tao Yuanming, the famous poet in Jin Dynasty. Besides, iron sutra pillar, the pagoda of De Hill, penholder battlements in the city area are provincial key cultural relics. In Huping Hill in Shimen County, there are more than 1000 kinds of precious animals and plants. Dragon-king Cave is a group of caves which can be compared with Yellow-dragon Cave of Wulingyuan. Jiashan Temple in Shimen County was built in Tang Dynasty, which has a holy place for Buddhism. The temple of literature in Li County is the biggest temple of literature in Hunan Province.
