Xiamen is situated along the coastline of southeast China, the west shore of Taiwan Strait and facing Taiwan across the strait, with a total area of 1,565 square kilometers. Xiamen is one of the four special economic areas that are earliest to practice open-door policies in China. In 2007, the population of permanent residents of Xiamen totaled 2.43 million. Its GDP mounted to RMB 137.526 billion, with an increase of 16.1% over the previous year and a per capita GDP of RMB 56,595. Xiamen is one of the five large inland ports in China. Xiamen Airport has airline routes covering the inland, as well as Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, South Korea, Japan, the United States and Europe, making it the important regional aviation hub in east China.
