Xiangshan County, which is in south flank of the Ynagtze River Delta ,in the middle of Zhejiang province and between xiangshan harbor and Sanmen Bay, is encircled on three sides by seas and one side by land. In the second year of Tang Shen Long dynasty(the A.D.706), xiangshan County was founded for its mountain which looks like an elephant. The whole county covers an area of 1,382 sq km including urban area of 28 sq km and has a population of 540 thousand including urban population of 120 thousand. The jurisdiction of Xiangshan County encompasses ten towns, five townships and three subdistricts.

In recent years, Xiangshan people develop and practice Xiangshan spirit, so the economy and the society are both improved steadily and the same with the comprehensive strength. Xiangshan has four distinguishing features.

The first is the characteristics of the resources. Xiangshan is a coastal county with a sea area 6,618 sq km, a coastline of 925 km, 656 islands with 60-80 thousand people living on them. Xiangshan horbor in the north is a famous fishery ecological harbor and Shipu port in the south is the national central fishing port and the experimental trade port of petty trade with Taiwan. Xiangshan is famous in Ynagtze River Delta for its rich sea resources with 36 golden beaches, 13.2 km long.

The second is the characteristics of industry. Xiangshan welcomed 8.3 million tourists in the whole year and the income of tourism came to RMB 8.4 billion. The construction economy ranked No.6 in Zhejiang Province with the output value of 66.6 billion.

The third is the characteristics of ecology. Xiangshan is situated in Peninsula with picturesque scenery. The forested rate is 59.1%, with Yushan Island and Jiushan island marine environment protection areas. As the natural oxygen bar, the fine rate of air quality is 96.4% ranked first in Zhejiang and negative oxygen ion content per cubic centimeter is 14,700 meeting the national primary standard. “Vigorous island in Oriental, fairy land among seamounts” is well known byword for Xiangshan.

The forth is the characteristics of culture. The marine characteristic culture consists of fishing culture, elephant(auspicious) culture, panacea(immortal) culture, Tashan culture, coast defense culture, maritime commerce culture, revolutionary tradition culture and local folk culture.In recent years, with the construction of marine culture, six of them were involved in China Intangible Cultural Heritage, and ten in provincial cultural heritage. Xiangshan was honored as the home of fishing culture and national experimental area of ecological pretection of marine fishing culture.
