Located on the easternmost tip of Shandong Peninsular, Rongcheng City is surrounded by the sea on three sides with a coastline of 500 kilometers. It faces Korea across the sea and is the nearest place to Korea from China. Rongcheng covers an area of 1,526 square meters and has a population of 670,000 in 2 precinct, 12 towns, 10 sub-districts, 826 administrative villages and 125 residential committees. It has two first-class open ports: Shidao Port and Longyan Port.

Rongcheng became the habitation of human beings as early as the Neolithic Age. The Western Han Dynasty (206BC –25AD) set up Buye County under Donglai Prefecture. According to historical records, the Emperor Qinshihuang had been to Rongcheng twice, watched the sea, offered sacrifice to the sun and had bridges and memorial temples built; the Emperor Hanwu had also come here to worship the god of sun. The Emperor Yongzheng of Qing Dynasty bestowed the name of Rongcheng in the 13 th year of his reign (1735). After the Revolution of 1911, the National Government of Rongcheng County and Anti-Japanese Democratic Government of Rongcheng County were founded successively. The People's Government of Rongcheng County was established after the foundation of the People's Republic of China and the “county” was upgraded to “city” in 1988.

The comprehensive strength of Rongcheng City tops Shandong Province. Its GDP in 2011 reached 69.94 billion yuan , and the value-added of the primary industry was 6.68 billion yuan , that of the secondary industry was 36.98 billion yuan and that of the tertiary industry was 26.68 billion yuan . The total financial income in 2011 reached 8 billion yuan .

Rongcheng is an excellent tourist city in China with rich tourist resources. There are dilapidated rocks and terrifying waves in the state-class scenic zone Cape Chengshantou, known as the “Chinese Cape of Good Hope”. Prime Minister Lisi visited here and wrote “ Qin Dong Men, Tian Jin Tou” (the East Gate of Qin Dynasty and the end of Heavens). Chengshantou nature-breeding wildlife reserve covers an area of more than 3,800 mu with roaring tigers and lions, cheerful birds and monkeys, which makes the visitors inside feel that they have been back to nature again. Nine-peak Mt. Cha with clouds and mist over around the year is the birthplace of Quanzhen Taoism. The nine peaks amidst the clouds are like nine great sails flying over the sea of clouds. The lagoon “Swan Lake” is like a blue diamond embedded on the Rongcheng Bay. Every year there are almost ten thousand of swans to spend winter here, and it is one of the top four biggest swan lakes in the world. What's more, there are Scenic Spots like “ Wu Hu Quan Yang Di (place of masculinity with a circle of five tiger-shaped hills)” holy water temple, Fahua Temple on Mt. Chi symbolizing friendships among China, Japan and Korea, Colorful Piebald Rock, etc, and 10 major lidos . There have come 36 thousand tourists from home and abroad in 2005 and the gross income of tourism reached 2.3 billion yuan .
